The communicative competence "rev01utioll" in
ESL has received considerable attention, but other
developments of potential importance can also be
discerned. They are (I) the concept of ESL competence
as intercultural interactional competence; and
(2) the acquisition of English through the study of
subject matter. The combined effect of these deve-lopments
is to pave the way for a more relevant and
perhaps more effective ESL curriculum for adults.
The philosophy of such an approach is outlined in
this paper.
