Over the past ten years, sentence combining has
become a standard fixture in native speaker high
school and university writing programs. Its popularity
is evidenced by the enormous number of
research studies, scholarly articles in academic
journals and classroom textbooks specifically
devoted to its use. This paper provides an overview
of the theory, research and practice of sentence
combining and its application to college level writing
programs for ESL/FL students.
