Sixty-two students from two sections of Freshman
English at a liberal arts college in northern Japan
were pretested, trained, and post-tested in an
experiment employing two methods to improve
reading speed: traditional paper exercises and
a reading machine (projector). Scores for the
experimental group increased significantly more
(p < .05) -than for the control group. Student
reactio~ are also reported.
