Although the bene ts of a communicative language teaching (CLT) approach to students’ com- municative ability have been well documented, there are few long-term studies examining the e ects of such an approach in an EFL context, particularly with young learners. This yearlong study focused on young beginner (1st-year primary school) learners in a student-centred CLT- based classroom that prioritized interactions between learners. Multiple data sources including video recording, periodic speaking tests, and student questionnaires were used to monitor the students’ progress and attitudes toward learning English. Although the small number of students in each class (6 to 8) was not representative of a typical primary class in Japan, the study conclud- ed that not only did the students enjoy participating in a CLT-based class, but also they were able to signi cantly improve their communicative ability.
