Here are brief biographies of the many writers who participated in the JALT2007 Conference Proceedings.
- Abe, Emika: Emika Abe has been teaching English and Japanese part-time at several universities in the Tokyo area. Her interests are autonomy, language learning motivation, and teaching to children.
- Aiba, Chizuko: Chizuko Aiba teaches at Tokyo Denki University. She has been teaching English to children for over 20 years. Her research interests are teaching English to EFL children, teacher training and material development.
- Aliponga, Jonathan: Jonathan Aliponga is currently an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of the Department of English Education at Kansai University of International Studies in Hyogo. He holds a Master's degree in English Language Teaching and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics. His research interests are ESL/EFL teaching methods, teacher education, and materials development
- Amundrud, Thomas: Thomas Amundrud has been teaching throughout the EFL industry in Japan for over seven years. He is currently a full-time foreign language instructor at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. His research interests include the sociocultural contexts of language teaching, researching EFL teaching as performance, learner and teacher autonomy, and teaching intercultural critical thinking skills.
- Arnold, Jake: Jake Arnold has taught English in Japan and Costa Rica for about 10 years. He is presently a teacher at a high school in Kanagawa and enjoys making stimulating materials and then teaching with them.
- Atkins, Andrew: Andrew M. J. Atkins is currently employed by Heian Gakuen in Kyoto. He has been involved with study abroad for more than ten years. He gained his M.A. TEFL/TESL from the University of Birmingham in 2003. He is currently interested in study abroad, spoken discourse analysis and culture in language teaching.
- Balint, Martin: Martin Balint is an associate professor at Kyoto Institute of Technology. He is currently interested in research on Japanese EFL language learner beliefs and content-based English language instruction. z98373 at kit.ac.jp
- Bell, Leon: Leon Bell is an English lecturer with Momoyama Gakuin Daigaku. He has experience teaching at private language schools and also within public education in Japan. It was in these situations that his interest in non-standard accents developed.
- Bong, Miki Hyun Kyung: Miki Hyun Kyung Bong is Associate Professor of English at Shinshu University. She holds BA and MA from Nagoya National University in English Linguistics and M.Phil. and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in English and Applied Linguistics. Her doctoral study was on the second language acquisition of English by Japanese speaking learners. Her research interests are in the field of first language (L1) and second language (L2) acquisition and teaching, in particular roles of causal factors for divergence such as variabilities of the input caused by learning environments and L1 lexicons.
- Byrd, Brian: Brian Byrd belongs to Seigakuin University General Research Institute. He has been teaching English to children for 24 years. His research interests are developing materials for children, teacher training, modern Japanese history, and teaching English Bible.
- Chartrand, Robert: Robert Chartrand has been living and teaching in Fukuoka for over twenty years. His main research interests include CALL and Second Language Acquisition. He is a full-time English instructor at the Institute of Foreign Language Education, Kurume University. He has an M.A. in TESOL from the School for International Training, U.S.A. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Kyushu Institute of Technology, Faculty of Computer Science.
- Chin Leong, Patrick Ng: Patrick Ng received his Doctorate in Education from Leicester University, UK. His research interests include EFL teaching methodology, online learning, drama in education and language planning management. He has published and presented papers on Readers Theatre (a script writing activity) at conferences in Asia. Previously, he has taught English and Communication Skills at various tertiary institutes in Singapore. He is currently a senior lecturer at the Language Institute in Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
- Christianson, Mark: Mark Christianson is an instructor in the English Language Program at ICU. He is interested in issues relating to fluency and confidence in second language writing and speaking.
- Claro, Jennifer: Jennifer Claro teaches English at Kitami Institute of Technology in Kitami, Hokkaido. Her current research interests are virtual learning environments, online intercultural student exchanges, and how Japanese culture affects student ability to speak English.
- Collins, William: William Collins has been working at Nagasaki University for five years. His research interests are teaching and evaluating speaking skills, storytelling, and teaching vocabulary.
- Dougherty, Aya: Aya S. Dougherty is on the faculty of the University of Hyogo. Her research interests are in bilingual education, interpretation, and composition.
- Dougherty, Patrick: Patrick T. Dougherty is on the faculty of the University of Hyogo. His research interests are in EFL/ESL methodology, teacher training, and creative writing.
- Elwood, James: James Elwood, Tsukuba University, is interested in psychometrics EFL/ESL and puppetry in the EFL classroom.
- Falout, Joseph: Joseph Falout is an assistant professor at Nihon University who researches learner demotivation.
- Fenton-Smith, Ben: Ben Fenton-Smith is the Assistant Director in charge of research in the English Language Institute at Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba City. He has a PhD in linguistics from Macquarie University, and his research interests include second language reading, task-based curriculum design, discourse analysis and systemic functional linguistics.
- Fernández, María: María Fernández has been teaching Spanish to both majors and non-majors students in Japan for the last eight years. Her research interests include lexical acquisition and cross-linguistic influence.
- Foss, Patrick: Patrick Foss teaches in the School of Science and Technology at Kwansei Gakuin University.
- Foster, Margarita: Margarita Foster is a part-time lecturer at Tohoku University. She lives in Sendai, and her studies include psychology and criminology, in universities in Bolivia, Japan and Spain. Currently her research interests are juvenile delinquency and resilience.

- Fujiwara, Machiko: Machiko Fujiwara belongs to Seigakuin University General Research Institute. She has been teaching English to children for over 25 years. Her research interests are developing materials for children, teacher training, and cross-cultural communication.
- Fulmer, Patrick: Patrick Fulmer teaches at Showa Women's University, Tokyo, and at Tokyo Gakugei University. - Greer, Tim: Tim teaches in the School of Languages and Communication at Kobe University. His research interests include conversation analysis, codeswitching and identity-in-interaction.
- Hall, James: James is an associate professor in English education at the Iwate University Faculty of Education. For the CCUP project he served as a teacher trainer, research assistant, and emergency stand-in ALT. His current research interests are task-based language learning and teacher education. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his family and exploring the great outdoors of northern Japan.
- Harrison, George M.: George M. Harrison is a doctoral student in Educational Psychology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa georgeha at hawaii.edu. Prior to this, he was co-Director of the English Language Program at Nihon University, Mishima.
- Harting, Axel: Axel Harting has a Master degree in German and English and taught at Bielefeld University (Germany) and at the University of New South Wales (Australia) before coming to Japan. He is now working at Hiroshima University and is doing his PhD on teaching German writing skills to Japanese students.
- Hatanaka, Junko: Junko Hatanaka has been a lecturer in Japanese at The University of Texas at Austin since 2000. She has received M.S. in Rhetoric and Technical Communications at Michigan Technological University and has received M.A. in Japanese at University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998
- Heywood, David: David Heywood has lived in Japan for 15 years and is currently in Kobe. He has recently completed his Masters degree in TESOL with Aston University.
- Hirose, Keiko: Keiko Hirose is a professor in the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Aichi Prefectural University, where she teaches English as well as applied linguistics and TEFL. Her research interests include L2 writing pedagogy and contrastive rhetoric.
- Hisatsune, Ayako: Ayako Hisatsune is an Assistant Professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Ishikawa Japan. Her research interests include learner motivation/autonomy, student-centered learning, and learning strategies.
- Hood, Michael: Michael Hood, Nihon University, is interested in L2 writing and academic literacy acquisition.
- Hubert, Russell: Russell P. Hubert is an assistant professor in the Department of Cultural Studies at Kyoto Sangyo University. His research interests currently include writing skills development and incorporating music into the EFL curriculum.
- Hudson, Peter: Peter Hudson has taught in British Columbia (1987), Ottawa (2001), and lectured at Southern Cross University and is currently at Queensland University of Technology.
- Hudson, Sue: Sue Hudson is the Academic Coordinator for the Caboolture campus at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and has 28 years in education.
- Hughes, Leander: Leander Hughes is an assistant professor of English at the Saitama University Center for English Education and Development. His research interests include learner autonomy, communicative task effectiveness, teaching English for academic purposes, and computer assisted language learning.
- Humphries, Simon: The author holds a Masters Degree in TESOL from Aston University and is currently studying to be a Doctor in Applied Linguistics through Macquarie University. His main research interest, apart from AR, is curricular innovation.
- Ikeda, Keiko: Keiko Ikeda is Associate Professor of Japanese language and second language studies at Graduate School of Languages and Cultures, Nagoya University. Her research interests include pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and various second language (Japanese) studies.
- Ishihara, Chiyoe: Chiyoe Ishihara is a graduate student at Graduate School of Languages and Cultures, Nagoya University. She is currently doing a research on advising speech act in Japanese communication.
- Ishikawa, Kayoko: Kayoko Ishikawa received her Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Georgetown University in 2000. Her research interests include English loanword usage by native Japanese speakers, bilingual education, and second language acquisition.
- Izumi, Junji: Junji Izumi is teaching Japanese at a language school in Tokyo. He has been working as an English-Japanese translator for more than ten years.

- Kagimoto, Eve: Eve Kagimoto has taught English extensively in Tanzania, Europe and Japan. Her current research interests include student motivation, corrective feedback and vocabulary acquisition.
- Kaneko, Ikuyo: Ikuyo Kaneko is a full-time lecturer at Juntendo University. She is currently interested in English emotional expressions produced by Japanese learners of English.
- Karlin, Omar: Omar Karlin is an Assistant Professor at Tokai University, just outside of Tokyo, Japan. He has completed his doctoral coursework at Temple University Japan and is in the midst of completing his dissertation. His dissertation focus is on the interaction of personality, second language acquisition, and different learning environments.
- Kluge, David: David Kluge has been teaching EFL, specifically oral skills and research paper writing, in Japan for almost 23 years and has just published Basic Steps to Research Paper Writing with Thomson (Cengage Learning). His interests include materials development, drama, oral interpretation, speech, CALL, and cooperative learning.
- Kobayashi, Chiho: Chiho Kobayashi is a lecturer in the Department of European and American Studies, Faculty of International Culture Studies at Tenri University. Her research interests include vocabulary acquisition and English as an international language.
- Kondo, Yoshiko: Yoshiko Kondo finished her Masters course at Okayama University in 2004 and is continuing her study with her co-researchers, Naomi Fujishima and Scott Gardner. - Kumagai, Minako: Minako Kumagai started teaching English at a high school in Japan in 1996. She completed her M.A. studies in TESOL at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York in 2002. She is interested in intercultural communication, sociolinguistics, cross-cultural pragmatics, and conflict resolution in intercultural settings.
- Lachini, Kourosh: Kourosh Lachini, Ph D in TESOL, has been teaching English for the past 22 years at different levels of education from junior high school to Ph D levels in different countries of the world. He is specialized in Language Testing and Assessment as well as Language Learning and Communication Strategies. Dr. Lachini has also presented his research results worldwide, has published several books and articles on English Language Teaching and Assessment in international journals and conference proceedings, and is currently a member of the editorial board of the Asian EFL journal published in South Korea and the journal of Cross-Cultural Pragmatics published in New York, USA. Recently, he has been awarded the Best of TESOL Arabia 2005 certificate for the excellence of research in TESOL issues. - Lehtinen, Ben: Ben Lehtinen is currently a lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies where he teaches reading and writing.
- Lieb, Margaret-Mary: Margaret-Mary Lieb teaches and conducts research at Meiji University. Her research interests include the Affective Domain, intercultural communication, multiple intelligences, and musico-linguistic approaches.
- Luk, Hector: Hector Luk teaches at Kansai University of International Studies and Kwansei Gakuin University. He completed his Master's degree in Applied Linguistics at Macquarie University in 2005, and his research interests are teacher education, bilingualism and learner development.
- Maune, John: John F. Maune teaches ESL and Life Science in the department of English at Hokusei Gakuen Unversity Junior College in Sapporo. He is interested in many things including evolution, Shakespeare, and mountain biking.

- Miyahara, Masuko: Masuko Miyahara teaches full-time at the International Christian University in Tokyo. Her area of interests includes reading in second language acquisition, autonomy, and learner identity. She holds a MA TESOL from the Institute of Education, University of London, where she is currently pursuing her PhD in the area of identity and its relation with language development.
- Miyazato, Kyoko: Kyoko Miyazato, EDD is an associate professor of EFL and TESOL at Hakuoh University. Her research interests include NS-NNS issues, intercultural communication, and team teaching.
- Miyazoe, Terumi: Terumi Miyazoe is a PhD candidate in educational technology and a master's student in distance education. She is teaching at Tokyo Metropolitan University and Tamagawa University. Her interests include foreign languages education, CALL, and online distance learning.
- Mochizuki Sudo, Michiko: Michiko Mochizuki Sudo is a professor at Juntendo University. Her research interests include speech science and second language acquisition.

- Morikoshi, Kyoko: Kyoko Morikoshi is an associate professor in the department of English at Hokusei Gakuen University Junior College in Sapporo. She is currently interested in an international tutors program in English classes.
- Munezane, Yoko: Yoko Munezane holds an MA TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is teaching at University of Electro Communications. Her interests include global issues, futures education, English literature and promoting autonomy in learning.

- Murray, Adam: Adam Murray is a recent graduate of University of Technology, Sydney. His research interests are vocabulary acquisition, learner autonomy and online learning. He currently teaches at Tokyo Denki University, Kanda campus.
- Nakamura, Eiko: Eiko Nakamura is now studying in a PhD program of Applied Linguistics at Lancaster University, UK and is currently teaching part-time at Okayama University and Kawasaki University of Medical Welfare (located in Kurashiki city). Her interest is learner's language development, especially in speaking through task-based language learning.
- Nakamura, Tomoko: Tomoko Nakamura has been with Hiroshima International University since 2002. She is currently interested in English teaching methods for false beginners in Japan
- Nambu, Akiko: Akiko Nambu spent five year teaching English in Japanese upper secondary schools, where her teaching interests focused on team-teaching between Japanese Teachers of English and native speaker Assistant Language Teachers as well as communicative language teaching. After teaching in Japan, she received her MEd in Education, TESOL from the University of Exeter, UK. She is currently a PhD student in the English Literature department at Tohoku University, Japan. Her research interests include team-teaching by the non-native speaking teacher and native speaking teacher, autonomous learning, and teacher development.
- Nguyen, Thi Mai Hoa: Nguyen Thi Mai Hoa is a PhD candidate at The University of Queensland. Her research activities focus on English language teaching and EFL teacher education.
- Niiyama, Miki: Miki Niiyama is an associate professor at Kurume University. Her particular research interests include early English education, teacher training and language socialization in the context of EFL.
- Norman, Josh: Josh Norman graduated from Kumamoto University in 2003 with his PhD in Public and Social Policy and has been in Japan since 1997. He is currently teaching in the Department of Culture and Language at Shokei University in Kumamoto. His interests include and L1/L2 learning and bilingualism.
- O'Dwyer, Fergus: Fergus O`Dwyer lectures at Momoyama Gakuin and Osaka Kyouiku Daigaku High School. His current interests include the ELP and accents.
- O'Neill, Byron: Byron O'Neill is an assistant professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Kyoto Notre Dame University. His research interests currently include extensive reading and materials development.
- Oga-Baldwin, Quint: Quint Oga-Baldwin is a graduate of the Temple University Masters of Science in Education program. He is currently a lecturer at Fukuoka Jogakuin University and Kyushu Sangyo University. His research interests include teacher motivation and vocabulary acquisition.
- Ohata, Kota: Kota Ohata, Ph.D. is an instructor at International Christian University. His current research interests are the role of affect and cross-cultural issues in language learning.
- Ohta, Ritsuko: Ritsuko Ohta teaches at several universities. Her interest includes teaching writing.
- Osada, Eri: Eri Osada is a graduate student in the TESOL program at Sophia University. She teaches English at a public primary school in the northern part of Kanto, and she is interested in classroom research.
- Osuka, Naoko: Naoko Osuka has been teaching English at a college lebel for more than 10 years. Her major field is language learning strategies and skills.
- Pellicano, Gayle : Gayle Pellicano teaches at several universities in the Kanto area.
- Peterson, James: James A. Peterson has an MA TEFL from the Reading, University in England and a TESL Certificate from Vancouver Community College in Canada. He is currently employed by Sumikin-Intercom, and works as an international communications consultant on-site at the Gunma Manufacturing Division of Fuji Heavy Industries, maker of Subaru cars.
- Praver, Max: Max Praver earned his masters degree from Temple University Japan and is currently an English lecturer at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. He first arrived in Japan in 1999 and has been living and teaching in Kyushu for over 8 years. His research interests include maturational constraints in language acquisition and teacher motivation.
- Prichard, Caleb: Caleb Prichard has taught at the univesity level in Japan for over five years. He has also taught in South Korea and the United States.

- Reichert, Ruth: I have been living in Japan for 22 years. I have been with Hokuriku University since 1993 and have classes at Kanazawa Bijutsu Kogei Daigaku and Kanazawa Daigaku. I am interested in Japanese dance (shibu and kenbu), songs (shigin) and tea ceremony.
- Reinelt, Rudolf: Rudolf Reinelt has been teaching German on all levels of acquisition at Ehime University in Matsuyama since 1981. Recently, he made Blackboard, the digital LMS, and Active Mail in combination usable for second foreign language teaching.
- Rink, Lori: Lori Rink has worked at Kobe Kaisei Women's College for over 5 years as a full-time lecturer. There, she has focused on using technology and on examining global issues in the EFL classroom.
- Rodgers, Michael: Michael Rodgers is presently teaching at Fukuoka University. He has been teaching English at various institutions in Japan since 1996. His research interests include vocabulary coverage in media and student-teacher classroom beliefs.
- Romanko, Rick: Rick Romanko is a full-time lecturer at Wayo Women's University in Chiba, Japan. He holds an M.Ed. in TESOL from Temple University. His research interests include developing extensive reading programs and how learning is enhanced by various teaching methodologies. He is also active in materials development.
- Rubrecht, Brian: Brian G. Rubrecht earned his Masters degree in TESOL and Bilingual Education from Georgetown University in 2000 and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004 with a doctoral degree in Foreign Language Education. His professional interests include aspects of translation, interpretation, and curriculum development. His research interests include language learning motivation, second language learner autonomy, and cultural aspects that influence the learning of a foreign language.
- Rude, Markus: Markus Rude is an Associate Professor at Tsukuba University, where he teaches German. He formerly taught German and English at Dokkyo and Rissho University, respectively.
- Ruegg, Rachael: Rachael Ruegg has an MA in Applied Linguistics from Victoria University of Wellington. She works in the English department at Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba, Japan.
- Ruhl, Dawn Michele: Dawn Michele Ruhl has been working at Nagasaki University for five years. Her research interests are classroom management techniques, and interactive activities that develop speaking and listening fluency.

- Sekigawa, Yoko: Yoko Sekigawa, Ed.D., teaches at Rikkyo University in Tokyo. Her research interests include classroom discourse analysis, pragmatics, and intercultural communication. She has been working on EFL classroom discourse analysis in conversation analytic and sociocognitive perspectives. She is also incorporating critical pedagogy in EFL education and investigating its possibilities and difficulties in Japanese EFL classrooms.
- Shingu, Ikue: Ikue Shingu has been a lecturer in Japanese at Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 2002. She has received M.A. in Japanese from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1997.
- Sonda, Nozomu: Nozomu Sonda has been teaching English and translating between English and Japanese for 17 years and runs his own English language school. He also teaches at Yamaguchi University. - Tokunaga, Miki: Miki Tokunaga received her M.A. in TESL from Central Missouri State University. After working for several conversation schools, technical colleges and universities, she is currently a lecturer at Nakamura Gakuen University in Fukuoka.

- Vicente Rasoamalala, Leticia: Leticia Vicente-Rasoamalala es profesora agregada invitada de español en la Universidad Provincial de Aichi desde 2004. Previamente ha sido profesora visitante de la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional en la Universidad Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (Senegal). Sus áreas de investigación engloban el AICLE, la inmersión lingüística, la interacción conversacional en el aula, la optimización del input y la retroalimentación docente
- Ware, Jean: Jean Ware teaches English and Computer-skill classes at Tokai University. She is interested in optimizing students' learning through technology, multimedia, and via extensive reading and extensive listening. After a successful career in computer programming, she earned her MA in English: TESOL. She has been teaching English in Japan since 1999. She's also an administrator of the Moodle English web server for Tokai University's Foreign Language Center.
- Williams, Gerald: Gerald Williams is Chair of the Department of English Education at Kansai University of International Studies. He has a Master's of Education from Temple University. His research interests are currently focused on teacher development and the influence of context on pedagogical decision making.

- Yates, Nicholas: Nicholas Yates is currently a lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies where his research interests include CALL and technology mediated learning.
- Yonezawa, Miyuki: Miyuki Yonezawa is a Professor at Tokai University. Her academic interests include language acquisition, extensive reading and listening, American culture studies, race and ethnicity, and multiculturalism. She is one of the authors of the book, Race and Nation: Ethnic Systems in the Modern World, edited by Paul Spickard (Routledge, 2005). Her current research projects include multiculturalism in Japan, and extensive listening and its implementation in class.
- Yoshida, Keiko: Keiko Yoshida teaches part-time at Kansai University of International Studies. She completed a Master's degree in English linguistics at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies in 1998 and her research interests are in language acquisition, speech perception, language teaching, especially to small children.
- Zamborlin, Chiara: Chiara Zamborlin (Ph.D.) is a senior lecturer at Nagoya University of Arts, where she teaches Italian language and culture. Her field of research ranges from educational linguistics to cross-cultural pragmatics.
