The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between self-esteem and demotivation. Four hundred and fourteen university students were asked to respond to a few open-end questions including “What demotivated or discouraged you about learning English?” in addition to some multiple choice questions, and Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale. Various key words were extracted through a text mining analysis, and they, as well as the answers to the multiple choice questions, were analyzed with a correspondence analysis. Finally, students who used the key word, “Not able to understand” were isolated and cross-examined with the answers to the multiple choice questions. The findings showed that the students who disliked English and who did not think they were good at it did not necessarily have low self-esteem. On the other hand, the students who liked English and who thought they were fairly good at it showed relatively low self-esteem. It was considered that these results were influenced by the self-esteem defense mechanism.
