Masculinity and the Study Abroad Experience

In this paper I use uses psychoanalytic theory as a tool for understanding how learners construct and maintain their identities before their study abroad experiences. After discussing how subjectivity and masculinity are conceptualized within psychoanalysis, some of the commonly held ideas about identity and the acquisition of English expressed by male participants in the predeparture stage of study abroad is discussed.
