本稿の目的は，日本人成人学習者の英語学習過程でどのようなことが起こっているのか探ることにある。TOEIC受験など特定の目的ではなく英語習得そのものが目的であると思われる日本語で出版されているランゲージ・ラーニング・ストーリー15点を対象とした。その結果，言語目標を達成した学習者では学習初期の上達しない時期を経て，転換点を経験し，その後自己管理型の集中学習を数年間にわたって続けている者がいることがわかった。さらに，10年単位で学習を継続し，期待されている自己像（ought-to L2 self）によって強い動機づけをしている者がいることも明らかなになった。筆者自身，成人英語学習者であり，長い年月をかけて英語学習を続けてきたが，このような例は今回の調査対象の中ではよく見られるケースであることがわかった。本稿の目的は，日本人成人学習者の英語学習過程でどのようなことが起こっているのか探ることにある。
The aim of this study was to understand how Japanese adult learners learn English. Fifteen Japanese adult learners’ stories published in Japanese, excluding learners studying English for specific purposes such as taking the TOEIC, were collected and analyzed. These adult learners experienced a period in which they did not feel they had made progress, then came to a turning point and found a better way to study English, which they focused on for at least a year. They continued studying for at least 10 years and were motivated by their “ought-to L2 self.” An adult learner herself, the author found that it was usual for adult learners to continue studying over the long term in order to achieve their goals.
