JALT is proud to present the 2004 Four Corners Tour, featuring Susan Barduhn, Curtis Kelly, and Ed Cousins and Patrick Deas of Interacting. Last year's 2003 Four Corners Tour saw a change from a pre-conference to a post-conference setting. Thanks to the support of the sponsors and Christie Collins, nine JALT Chapters from around Japan played host to Jack Richards, Simon Greenall, and Dave Willis.
Breaking all the moulds and all traditions, this year's tour will gently wrap itself around the National Conference, and 14 of our energetic and enthusiastic JALT Chapters will play host to our very distinguished Four Corner Speakers.
It all begins in central Japan on November 13 with Patrick Deas and Ed Cousins of Interacting, who will break down the barriers which obstruct speech and communication. Teachers and students of all levels and ages will come away from this live language event feeling refreshed and motivated to study English! At the time of writing, the Tokyo, West Tokyo, Omiya, Nagoya, Okayama, and Hiroshima chapters are all working hard to finalize their dates and venues, so please keep an eye out for more details about the tour in your area.
In the week following the national conference in November, both the northern and southern tours will begin with plenary speaker Susan Barduhn making her way down from Hokkaido, through Aomori and Akita to Shizuoka before her flight home. She will present on The Lexical Approach and Making Vocabulary Memorable and Developing Cross-Cultural Awareness in the Monolingual Classroom.
Curtis Kelly, sponsored by Cambridge University Press, is also starting out after the national conference and will make his way up from Miyazaki through to Kumamoto, across to Nagasaki, and back out to Kitakyushu. He will cover a number of interesting topics including The Psychology of Difficult Students.
We encourage you to get out and support these events and speakers. Please stay tuned for more information about the tour from your local chapters, TLT, or check out the website at jalt.org.
The JALT Four Corners Coordinators, Caroline Lloyd, and Cynthia Keith, would like to thank the British Council and Cambridge University Press for their gracious support of the tour. Their help has ensured that JALT is able to continue with its tradition of taking our speakers to the Four Corners of Japan! Please be sure to take advantage of the chance to meet one of our distinguished speakers in your corner of the country!
Patrick Deas and Ed Cousins of Interacting are generously sponsored by the British Council and will be presenting Teacher and Student Speech and Communication. Look out for them in central Japan in the weeks leading up to the conference!
